Terminal 1 of Los Cabos International Airport primarily accommodates domestic flights originating from various locations in Mexico. Recently renovated, Terminal 1 offers a simplistic yet modern layout featuring entirely new terminals, a variety of eateries, Starbucks, and a baggage claim area. After disembarking from your plane at Terminal 1, you will proceed to enter the airport directly from the tarmac. Once inside Terminal 1’s baggage claim zone, facilities such as restrooms and rental car agency desks are available for your use. You can also organize your onward transportation, or simply leave the airport to continue to your final destination.
The Los Cabos Airport (SJD) is located in San Jose del Cabo. Upon arrival, your airline should have provided you a Mexican Tourist Card and a Mexico Customs Form (one per family). This is required for customs and you are required to pay any duties on any items that are not considered duty-free. (download the Los Cabos Airport Terminal 2 Map JPG | PDF)
After disembarking from your flight, you will traverse the tarmac leading to the entrance of Terminal 2 at Los Cabos Airport, which is designated for international arrivals. Should your plane touchdown at a distance from the airport entrance, anticipate a complimentary shuttle bus ride from the tarmac to the customs area.
Once inside, if you haven’t secured a tourist card or customs form, you’ll have the opportunity to obtain one. New technologies being implemented are allowing for the removal of physical FM Tourism Visas.
This area also features fully-equipped restrooms that are handicap-accessible. You will then proceed down a corridor and descend to Mexican Customs via an escalator, stairs, or an elevator, which is available for those with mobility challenges.
As you approach customs, please have your Mexican Tourist Card(s) and passport ready for inspection by the agents. The Forma Migratoria Múltiple, often referred to as the FMM serves as an “admission document” provided to holiday visitors from specified nationalities. Although commonly known as a tourist “Visa,” it’s technically not a visa. If you wish, you can apply for the tourist card online prior to your trip to Mexico. Each FMM, which can be valid for up to 180 days, must be issued individually, even for children. It’s essential to keep your FMM card safe, as you’ll need it to exit Mexico. If lost, you’ll be required to pay a penalty fee to obtain a replacement before leaving the country. In this customs reception area, if you are a resident of Mexico or a national representative, there’s a dedicated customs line for your convenience.
After clearing customs and obtaining your entry stamp for Mexico, you can proceed to collect your luggage. There are seven baggage claim areas, all of which are potentially subject to further checks by the authorities. Complimentary luggage carts are provided in the baggage claim area. If you have oversized luggage, cargo, or are traveling with live animals, you should head to the final baggage station. The inspection area for permitted pets or animals is conveniently located next to the foreign money exchange counter. Should you encounter any issues or questions concerning luggage retrieval, airline representatives from each carrier are available to assist you at a desk situated at the far end of the baggage area.
Please ensure that you only pick up your own luggage, as many bags can look similar. Within this baggage claim area, you also have the option to exchange US Dollars for Mexican Pesos. Remember that all currency exchanges require your passport. The baggage claim area is also equipped with fully accessible bathrooms for those with mobility challenges.
Once you’ve collected your luggage, you’ll continue to a customs inspection. At this point, you’ll be asked to press a button on a traffic signal-like device. This random selection process decides whether your belongings undergo further screening – a green light lets you proceed, while a red light indicates that your items will be further inspected and scanned.
Upon successful review of your Mexican Immigration Form and passing through immigration please proceed to the next area – Time Share sales, Cabo Activities, Taxis, and, Rental Car offers.
After completing all airport arrival procedures, please make your way towards the exit. After passing through the solicitation room, passengers are required to turn right to reach the transportation area.
After exiting the airport, you can meet up with your travel companions or unwind at one of the two on-site bars or restaurants. If you have prearranged transportation, proceed across the street to one of the awnings where your drivers and vehicles will be waiting. If you require a taxi, you can arrange for one right at the curbside. You have now successfully navigated your way out of Terminal 2 at Los Cabos Airport.
