SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO, B.C.S., October 25, 2026. Los Cabos and La Paz rank among the safest cities in Mexico for perceived public security, according to the third-quarter 2026 National Urban Public Security Survey (ENSU) published by Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). The results add to a decade in which Los Cabos has grown into one of the country’s leading leisure destinations.
The survey covers 91 urban areas nationwide. In September 2026, 37.8 percent of adult residents in Los Cabos and 33.4 percent in La Paz said they consider their city unsafe, compared with a national rate of 58.1 percent. La Paz ranks 13th and Los Cabos 16th among the 91 cities measured, placing both in the top fifth nationally. The national rate also improved, down from 59.8 percent in June.

Baja California Sur Among the Safest Cities in Mexico
INEGI conducts the ENSU every quarter to measure how residents perceive public security in the city where they live. The September 2026 edition surveyed 27,300 households during the first half of the month. The survey reports perception rather than recorded crime, and it reflects day-to-day conditions as described by the people who live and work in each city.
Both of Baja California Sur’s principal cities placed well below the national rate. For travelers weighing where to spend a vacation, that standing remains an important consideration, and it reinforces the region’s position as a destination of choice in Mexico.
Los Cabos Safety and a Decade of Growth
Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) handled 7.53 million passengers in 2025, up 77 percent from 4.25 million in 2016, according to Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, which operates the airport. A secure environment supports continued traveler confidence as that growth extends into new markets.
The airport enters the November to May high season with expanded service from Canada, the destination’s second-largest international source market. Porter Airlines begins nonstop service from Toronto on November 16 and from Ottawa on December 18, and Air Transat adds a weekly flight from Montreal on December 10. The Los Cabos Tourism Trust has said the added connectivity positions the destination for a record year of Canadian visitation.
Information for Travelers
The ENSU measures resident perception and does not replace official travel advisories. Visitors should review current guidance from their home government before departure. A complete list of carriers serving SJD is available on the airline list, and private airport transportation can be reserved in advance of arrival.
Schedules are subject to change. Travelers should confirm flight details directly with their airline prior to booking.
