Getting around a new destination like Los Cabos, Mexico, is easy on the public bus. It’s an affordable, reliable way to travel between the airport, San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. Many locals are used to helping tourists and often speak some English — but it helps to have your plan sorted before you land, and to know your other options if you’d rather go door-to-door.
The Ruta del Desierto bus is a safe, comfortable and budget-friendly way to travel from the airport to San José del Cabo and on to Cabo San Lucas. The fare is MX$80 for trips to or from the airport, and just MX$37 between San José and Cabo San Lucas. You’ll find the bus stop at Terminal 1, a short walk from Terminal 2 where international flights arrive.
The Ruta del Desierto service has two main stops: the La Comer supermarket in San José del Cabo and near the Puerto Paraíso mall in Cabo San Lucas. With frequent stops along the way, it’s a convenient option for reaching most major hotels and resorts in the area.
Terminal 1 is the only place to catch the public bus connecting the airport with San José del Cabo downtown, the Tourist Corridor and Cabo San Lucas. Operated by Ruta del Desierto, these distinctive purple-and-yellow buses are hard to miss. Buy tickets at the bus desk in the arrivals area of Terminal 1. Buses run daily, starting from Santa Anita (south of the airport) as early as 4:30 am until about 11:00 pm, roughly every 8 to 10 minutes. If you arrive at Terminal 2, you’ll walk with your luggage to Terminal 1 to board.
Most hotel and resort stops are along the highway, so you may need to cross the road and walk up to your property. Heading back to the airport, buses drop off at Terminal 1 first, then Terminal 2 (no walking needed). Depending on your location and traffic through San José del Cabo, allow up to 1–2+ hours to reach the airport by bus.
If you’re traveling to the East Cape area, Todos Santos or La Paz, ask at the airport bus desk — this service uses vans rather than buses, and staff can give you current schedules and prices. During holidays and peak season these sell out days in advance.
